Both the Hardibacker panel and the special Hardibacker scoring tool claim you can score it a few times (3 according to the scoring tool) and snap it like you do with glass or sheetrock. This has NEVER worked for me, regardless of whether it's 1/4" or 1/2". I even bought the special scoring tool because it wouldn't work with a utility knife.
