Giving up 3 of your currently 5 feats for it can be tough if you don't really want anything else from it. they're using the free archetype optional rule, so they're not giving up any feats for investigator. Magus is definitely very good at blasting a single target - although you may need buffs/debuffs from the party to get a good hit in on a powerful baddy. There's also a 2nd level feat that lets you use area spells. If you have a reach or ranged build, you can shoot those area spells in different directions than other casters. For the Magus, the only weapon trait that justifies taking any weapon but the one with the highest damage die is reach. Thematically, do what you want. Mechanically, monk is probably the stronger base with stances, flurry, better AC, better saves, ki strike and super fast movement. Magus only offers spellstrike which is just ok, and bounded spellcasting sucks.
